Frequently asked questions about cinemas in the Ruhr region
1. is there the most beautiful movie theater in Dortmund, Essen, Bochum, Oberhausen or Duisburg?
We think all the cinemas we have listed are super nice, but the Lichtburg in Essen is definitely one of the most impressive cinemas you can visit. With 1250 seats today, it has the largest movie theater in Germany that has been preserved from the pre-war era - you don't see that every day! ✨
2. can you also watch films in the original language in cinemas in the Ruhr region?
Yes, all the cinemas we show you (and most others in the Ruhr region) also show films in the original with or without subtitles. Smaller indie productions are often not dubbed at all and OmU is often the only way to watch them in the cinema. This is particularly common at sweetSixteen or Casablanca , for example.
3. can you rent cinemas in the Ruhr area for private events?
Many cinemas offer private room hire - for birthdays, corporate events or even gaming events. Prices and availability vary depending on the cinema. 🎦
4. are you allowed to bring your own snacks and drinks to cinemas in the Ruhr area?
This is generally not permitted. The sale of drinks or snacks is usually an important source of income for the operators and the smaller arthouse cinemas in particular often just about keep their heads above water. But beware: not all arthouse cinemas always have popcorn on offer. In the Schauburg in Dortmund, for example, popcorn is only sometimes available, and unfortunately not at all in the sweetSixteen. What we know for sure: It's definitely available at Lichtburg Essen and Lichtburg Filmpalast Oberhausen 🍿
