Musikfest Berlin 2026: World-Class Orchestras, International Ensembles, and 75 Years of the Berliner Festspiele
Anyone who thinks of stiff concert evenings when they hear “classical music” might be pleasantly surprised here: From August 28 to September 23, 2026, Berlin will once again become the stage for some of the most exciting concert experiences of the year: The Musikfest Berlin 2026 not only kicks off the new concert season but is also dedicated this year to a special anniversary. The Berliner Festspiele are celebrating their 75th anniversary, and that’s exactly what makes this edition of the festival even more special.
The Classical Music World Visits Berlin
In 2026, the Musikfest Berlin will once again bring together top international ensembles, renowned conductors, and extraordinary concert formats at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, the Konzerthaus Berlin, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. A total of 36 events await you, featuring over 60 works by around 40 composers, more than 65 soloists, and over 30 international ensembles. You’ll have the chance to experience world-class ensembles such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Chineke! Orchestra with the Cape Town Opera, and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.
To kick things off, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra will present Ligeti’s cult opera *Le Grand Macabre*. The Kanze Nō Theater also offers a rare opportunity. This guest performance from Tokyo brings a theatrical form over 700 years old to Berlin, opening up a unique aesthetic universe of masks, dance, and minimalist stagecraft. The Salzburg Marionette Theater is also sure to be one of the festival’s highlights. With Stravinsky’s *The Soldier’s Tale*, the art of marionettes meets modern music, visual art, and theater. The production features marionettes by artist Georg Baselitz, with Dominique Horwitz as the narrator. Those looking for something new and experimental should check out the Ensemble Modern with the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart. The program features contemporary music, electronics, voices, and experimental sounds, including a world premiere by Márton Illés. The focus is on themes such as language, transformation, and sound exploration.

Highlights: Big Names, Great Works, and Diversity
One example is Le Concert des Nations, conducted by Jordi Savall, on August 29. For anyone who loves large-scale orchestral works, this concert should be particularly appealing: Savall and his ensemble will perform Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” and “Italian” symphonies.
The 2026 Musikfest Berlin will feature a diverse cultural program ranging from musical theater and opera to contemporary art.
As on September 2, with Wolfgang Rihm’s *Tutuguri*, one of the most impressive works of contemporary music.

But the fact that the Musikfest Berlin isn’t just for die-hard classical music fans is also demonstrated by *Das Konzert mit der Maus* on September 6. This family-friendly festival highlight introduces children and adults to classical music in a playful way and proves that a concert evening doesn’t have to be complicated to leave a lasting impression.
Also on September 6, the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano, will perform in Berlin. The program features works by Sofia Gubaidulina and Anton Bruckner.
