Quarter favorites: Obergiesing

If you're hungry in the neighborhood and fancy craft beer and Neapolitan cuisine, Ambar Bistro on Tegernseer Landstraße is the place to go. We recommend: Beer. Not just because we're in Giesing, but because there's plenty of it at Ambar - mainly beers from Munich and the surrounding area. The selection is always changing and "guest beers" from outside the Munich radius also make it onto the menu. Also recommended: Ambar's very small but excellent food menu. Whether you fancy meatballs in tomato sauce, fresh pasta or Italian-style mussels - no one has to leave Ambar hungry. The selection varies depending on the season, but there is always a mixed starter plate. Vegetarian or vegan options are also available on request.

Not everyone knows it, but it's a real oldie: the Alpenhof on Alpenplatz. The osteria has been serving classic Italian cuisine, especially pizza and pasta dishes, since 1901. Whether it's for a quick bite at lunchtime or an extended evening with several glasses of wine - you can't go wrong with a visit to the Alpenhof. Our tip: always take a look at the monthly menu, it always has a surprise in store.

Obergiesing can also do Vietnamese street food really well, thanks to an inconspicuous little store called Bep Ho. Whether it's banh mi, summer rolls or pho - everything tastes good here and won't hurt your wallet. If you prefer to take your food to go, you can grab a bench right next to the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche church or head a few meters further to Kronepark.

Drink pastis, drink rosé! You are encouraged to do so at Crönlein. The converted outhouse on Nockherberg - yes indeed - is indisputably the most romantic place in the whole of Obergiesing. If not the whole of Munich, but romance is debatable. You can stock up on drinks, pizza, spelt waffles and gummy bears in the bar downstairs and then climb the stairs to the top. Large and small tables and deckchairs are available for you here.

In search of coziness in Obergiesing, one stop is a must: Café Schau ma moi. Whereby café is somehow not correct, Schau ma moi is more of a boazn. It is actually always open, except on Sundays, and whatever is in the fridge or not yet empty is served. So don't be disappointed if you don't get everything on the menu. In summer, Schau ma moi is particularly nice, because then you can make yourself comfortable in the small beer garden under colorful fairy lights.

Whether for lunch or a quick dinner - the Deli Kitchen scores with vegetarian and vegan soul food. You can find the current menu of the day on the Deli Kitchen website. What's always on the menu: Sage gnocchi, quiche, penne rigatte, sandwiches, acai bowls, muesli and, of course, lots of really delicious cakes. Everything is vegan or vegetarian across the board. On Sundays, a trip to the Deli Kitchen is particularly tempting, because then you can also have breakfast here. If you just want to make a stopover, you can also take all the food and drinks away with you.

In a list of hotspots in a district like Obergiesing, there's one thing that shouldn't be missing: a hearty pub. This is where you go to the Wirtshaus Hohenwart with its beautiful pub garden. Here you can enjoy first-class Bavarian cuisine - but it's not cheap. You can also get some exercise at the Hohenwart, as there is a bowling alley at the back of the pub.

Created as a community garden, the Giesinger Grünspitz is now a green meeting place for many things: thanks to a large kiosk, you can get food and drink here, enjoy the occasional open-air cinema or live music and inspect what the Giesinger:innen are growing in their beds. The Grünspitz is also the number one place to go when there's something to celebrate in the Grünwalderstadtion after a Löwen game. Or not - after all, people drink in both cases.

The Kronepark is located directly on the Nockherberg - virtually on the other side of the Nockherberg above Café Crönlein. It is perfect for a picnic or as a place to take food from the restaurants and bars listed above. There is no shortage of benches here either. So if you don't want to sit on the ground, you'll find what you're looking for here too. You can also play table tennis in the Kronepark, but you'll need to bring your own net. And while we're on the subject of playing, there is a large playground for children to run around and climb.

Whether you feel like reading, lying in the sun, jogging or playing basketball: pretty much anything is possible in the 8-hectare Weißensee Park. There is a water playground for the kids, skaters can let off steam in the so-called "Katzenbuckel" and, last but not least, there is also a boules court and a pumping station. Yes, that's right - here you can work on your body on several pieces of equipment. But more importantly, there are also table tennis tables!

The Asia Markt on Tegernseer Landstraße in Obergiesing is a real gem. Every inch of the store is filled with great specialties from China, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand. And the sauce department also has a lot to offer. There is also a small cold room in the middle of the Asian market where you can buy fresh herbs such as Thai basil or coriander. If you want to stock up on bamboo steamers, chopsticks or crockery, you'll find what you're looking for at the very back. As you can see, plan some time for a visit, because exploring here is a lot of fun.

Are there still junk stores in Munich? Absolutely. And one of them is in Obergiesing on Tegernseer Landstraße. At Hoibe Hoibe you can find junk, antiques and rarities. Window shopping alone is great fun here thanks to the constantly changing display. But don't be afraid to venture inside the store - owner Adelheid knows a good story about pretty much everything in the store.
