The 2026 World Cup is coming up - and this time it's going to be big. Very big indeed. It will be played from June 11 to July 19, 2026 in the USA, Canada and Mexico. For the first time, 48 teams will be competing, with a total of 104 matches on the schedule. More soccer is hardly possible - you can decide for yourself whether this is a gift or a slight sensory overload.
For us in Bremen, this means public viewing in midsummer, soccer evenings in the open air, full pubs, loud cheers and probably a few very tired faces the next morning. Because the time difference to North America means that some kick-off times are more employee-friendly. 7 p.m.? We'll take it. 10 pm? Also okay. Anything after that? Let's say: dark circles and, depending on the results, increased irritability.
And yes, of course the 2026 World Cup also needs to be viewed critically. Even bigger, even more games, even more travel, even more commerce - modern professional soccer sometimes seems more like a global mega-event on steroids than a tournament for the fans. And that's without mentioning the total political failures.
Nevertheless, soccer can unite. Especially when you watch it together - not alone in front of the laptop stream, but outside in Bremen, between friends, strangers, neighbors and people who suddenly speak the same language for 90 minutes: "Shoot!"
