The Ruhrtriennale '24: "Longing for tomorrow"
It's that time again! The Ruhrtriennale is entering the next round and will be showing us the most diverse program you can imagine for a whole month from 16 August. The festival of the arts in the Ruhr metropolis is regarded as THE cultural highlight in late summer.
For one month, the cities of Bochum, Duisburg and Essen are transformed into a festival site: For four weeks, there will be dancing, acting, music and discussions on stage. In addition to the showcases, there is something very special this year that rounds off the festival perfectly: the"Wunderland" festival center at the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum. In addition to a variety of catering options, the festival center offers a whole range of activities with Free admission - from workshops and concerts to long party nights. Be inspired and take part in the cultural festival on the Ruhr! ✨
The entire program revolves around this year's motto "Longing for Tomorrow"
The motto of this year's edition is "Longing for Tomorrow" and we can hardly imagine a more fitting wish at this time. International and national greats from the contemporary art scene have explored this theme and are presenting their results over the course of an entire month (16.08.-15.09). The aim is to explore the exciting question of what a (better) "tomorrow" could look like. In this way, the Ruhrtriennale is in tune with the times or even ahead of them - the productions and panels are thought-provoking, with questions about race, gender and power structures as well as the challenges we face as a society, including climate change and wars.
Be part of the Ruhrtriennale - not just a spectator:in
Ivo Van Hove wants to go in search of "lost and new paradises" and skillfully brings together the different disciplines. The various focal points of the Ruhrtriennale are also derived from this project: Interdisciplinarity, mixing genres and participation are the keywords here.
The musical theater"The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions", for example, is not only great fun, but also imagines a post-patriarchal reality in which the Faggots and friends live freely and celebrate themselves (how nice would that be!).
In the dance piece"One One One", the spectators themselves become part of the performance: sitting on a chair, the dancer only performs for as long as eye contact is maintained with the person watching - an intense and confronting experience. The learning: We always move in contexts and are never "just" spectators.
Finally, everything comes together in the music theater"Abendzauber": Contemporary pop music by Björk is combined with the musical tradition of Bruckner and made tangible in the space as an immersive installation. As a spectator, you are completely self-sufficient here and explore the space auditorily together with the artists, all in a post-industrial setting - super atmospheric and impressive!
Culture in the Ruhr: Coking plants & mining slagheaps become venues
This is where the Ruhrpott comes into its own in terms of location. Performances take place in coking plants and engine houses as well as other mining and steel industry halls. The venues not only pose a challenge for the choreographers, the mostly very empty and open spaces also have a very special and impressive effect on the visitors. Director Kirill Serebrennikov also sees the spaces in connection with the motto of this year's Ruhrtriennale as a metaphor for hope: "Every day is an empty stage".
We are looking forward to and excited about the realization of the productions in the extraordinary venues, you can find our highlights here - you should definitely not miss out and secure a ticket quickly, the events are in high demand. 👇🌟
I Want Absolute Beauty | Ruhrtriennale 2024
Let's do some name-dropping here, because the Ruhrtriennale is really kicking off with a BANG! of artists. Sandra Hüller (!) sings songs by the icon PJ Harvey (!) and plays the leading role in this piece. She is accompanied by dances choreographed by the trio (LA)HORDE, who have also worked with Madonna (!).
The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions | Ruhrtriennale 2024
No more patriarchy! What would that look like? What "Barbie" perhaps didn't quite achieve becomes reality here for a brief moment. It gets loud, it gets sexual, it gets uninhibited and one thing above all: free!
Brave New Voices: Hengameh Yaghoobifarah & Fatma Aydemir | Ruhrtriennale 2024
My personal highlight of the "Brave New Voices" series: Hengameh Yaghoobifarah & Fatma Aydemir belong to a new generation of authors in Germany who are experimenting with different forms of literature, questioning literary traditions and addressing important topics from multiple perspectives and putting them on paper. Both are editors of the literary magazine for new literature "Delfi" and published the essay collection "Eure Heimat ist unser Albtraum" in 2019 - the "rock stars" of the German literary scene, so to speak.
Nils Frahm: Music for Ruhr | Ruhrtriennale 2024
One of the three open-air concerts at Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord: Nils Frahm is known for his beautiful classical music and simple genius. The multi-instrumentalist is also known for his mix of classical and electronic music and has worked on various film productions in addition to his solo projects. At the Ruhrtriennale, you can look forward to the artist's talent for improvisation!
Pump Into the Future Ball | Ruhrtriennale 2024
Over four hours of pumping! No contemporary festival can be imagined without the discipline of the ballroom. At the Triennale, icons of the community take to the stage and answer questions in the panel. Would you also like to strut down the catwalk with such confidence? No problem, in addition to the stage program, there will also be a workshop in the disciplines of voguing and runway. 💅
LEGENDE | Ruhrtriennale 2024
The film director Sergey Paradjanov would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. To mark the occasion, the rather overlooked artist is being portrayed & celebrated in ten different legends - and is finally getting the attention he deserves at the Ruhrtriennale!
Haugtussa | Ruhrtriennale 2024
A story about being different & a coming-of-age story wrapped in poetry and rock music make "Haugtussa" a theater spectacle 🌟
I would say, let's go! What better way to gather new inspiration during the summer break than this incredibly diverse cultural festival? You can find the entire Ruhrtriennale program here.👇 🤗
