RICHARD WAGNER Prelude to Tristan and Isolde WWV 90
RUDI STEPHAN Liebeszauber for baritone and orchestra
RICHARD WAGNER Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde
ANTON BRUCKNER Symphony No. 7 in E major WAB107
Love in its purest, unconditional form is the theme of Richard Wagner's Tristan and Isolde. His music portrays this with an intensity that has hardly been equaled to this day, when the famous "Tristan chord" opens harmonic doors in all directions. Rudi Stephan, who died all too young, also went through these doors, but his lovers can find happiness in his highly expressive love magic . This ballad, freely adapted from Friedrich Hebbel, appealed to baritone Dietrich Henschel so much that the guest of internationally renowned opera houses and concert halls, who is highly regarded for his extraordinary performance skills, is coming to Bremerhaven for our opening concert.
Bruckner achieved his international breakthrough with his Seventh Symphony, which was performed 33 times during his lifetime. Its dramaturgical unity makes it one of his most accessible symphonies to this day. And Richard Wagner is not far away either, when Bruckner intones the funeral dirge for the death of his admirer with solemn Wagner tubas in the coda of the slow movement.
