1000 Jahre Abtei Brauweiler

Brauweiler Abbey on the outskirts of Cologne is one of the oldest monasteries in the Rhineland and will celebrate its 1000th anniversary in 2024. The eventful history of the former Benedictine abbey can be experienced on a tour of the grounds and a visit to important interior rooms. From the 1000-year-old mulberry tree to the newly laid out baroque monastery garden, from the Romanesque cloister to the baroque prelature buildings, there are interesting details to discover and exciting stories to tell everywhere. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the abbey was used as one of the largest German workhouses. "Off to Brauweiler" was a dreaded exclamation. Cologne originals also spent their "summer retreat" here. The darkest chapter of the abbey's history began under National Socialist rule. The Brauweiler Memorial documents the events from the early concentration camp to the Gestapo prison.
At the end of the tour, you will be given an insight into the newly opened permanent exhibition on the history of the abbey.
