Statement of the jury for the Golden Letter 2026

Based on this close interweaving of design and content, a central feature of contemporary book art becomes apparent: the book is constantly being re-examined as an independent medium. In an international context, a wide variety of design approaches are emerging. This exhibition in cooperation with the Stiftung Buchkunst once again brings together outstanding examples of contemporary book design. On display are the 14 award-winning titles as well as 21 publications from the shortlist of the international competition, selected by an independent jury according to design and conceptual criteria.

The Golden Letter went to the book "Ourouboros Wings" by Dutch graphic designer Benaiah French. The innovative combination of content and form was particularly emphasized: By folding the printed sheets, areas of color migrate into the interior of the Japanese binding, where they enter into an exciting dialogue with other layout elements. This creates a multi-layered visual perspective on a current, bizarre discourse on "fat bikes" in the Netherlands.

The other award-winning publications come from numerous countries and represent a selection of around 570 submissions from 33 nations. They reflect the diversity and vitality of contemporary book design.

The exhibition is part of the cooperation with the Stiftung Buchkunst, which has existed since 2024, and will be presented in the art library of HALLE 14, which offers a special place for exchange and inspiration with around 25,000 volumes.

The competition is closely linked to Leipzig: The jury meeting and award ceremony take place annually in Leipzig and the Most Beautiful Books from around the world were first honored here back in 1963.
