16 Horsepower is regarded as the band that fundamentally changed the world of roots-based alternative music. With their raw intensity and the timbres of Appalachian folk, bluegrass, gospel and country - and with the use of traditional instruments such as banjo, Chemnitz concertina, hurdy-gurdy, lap steel and double bass - they filtered these influences through a modern, rock-influenced perspective.
This unusual mixture gave rise to a style-defining subgenre that later became known as "Gothic Country", "Gothic Americana" or - in the fertile alternative Denver of the 1990s - simply as "The Denver Sound".
With the permanent core trio of David Eugene Edwards, Jean-Yves Tola and Pascal Humbert, changing musical companions and a tireless drive to push boundaries, the band left an unmistakable sonic and thematic fingerprint. Whether fiery sermon, ghostly ballad or traditional folk song in a new, dark guise, 16 Horsepower created a body of work that is deeply American while carrying a universally "gothic" vision.
This legacy will continue in 2026:
The band announces their big European reunion - with the core trio reunited to finally perform their celebrated music live for the first time since November 22, 2005.
