The Dortmund Philharmonic's sponsorship of the Dortmund Youth Orchestra (DOJO) continues with a program full of highlights: rousing rhythms, great melodies, deep emotions, a majestic rush of sound - in this concert, everyone comes into their own, including the young musicians of the DOJO, who play "side by side" on a podium with musicians from the Philharmonic.
George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein are two of the most frequently performed composers of American music. Both effortlessly managed the balancing act between concert and popular music. Florence Price's piece is a discovery to be made in the concert. Price was the first black female composer whose music was performed by one of the five major US orchestras in 1933. The renaissance of her work since a Grammy-winning CD recording in 2020 has attracted worldwide attention. With her idea of replacing the scherzo of a symphony with a jazzy "juba", a dance deeply rooted in African-American traditions, she succeeded in enriching the symphonic genre in an original way. The concert concludes with irresistibly effective film music by John Williams.
