If the newspaper dies, the region dies. Local newspapers in particular have been struggling with advertising and subscription losses for years. As a result, jobs are being cut in local editorial offices in particular.
The number of "one-newspaper districts", in which one media company holds the news monopoly, is increasing. Local blogs and citizen journalism models could preserve the diversity of the German media landscape, but there are still no viable financing models for them. Media researchers warn: local journalism is important for democracy and media trust, but it no longer pays off.
What can help: press funding? Model projects?Non-profit status?

This VA is the 1st online discussion in the series "Journalism under pressure" .
The world of media is changing. The industry is reorganizing, good journalism costs money and trust must be maintained and regained.
Media form an infrastructure in democracy: they provide information, background reports and an exchange of opinions. As the "fourth estate", they critically
accompany the work of the administration, parliament and judiciary in the service of the public. What challenges does journalism face?
In four online discussions, we will shed light on the complex changes in our media environment and ask about possible courses of action.
