2025 marks the anniversary of the reopening of the Kunst- und Naturalienkammer der Stiftungen, one of the best-preserved early bourgeois universal collections. The annual exhibition aims to take stock and commemorate and pay tribute to the great achievement of reconstructing the chamber and making it accessible in 1995 - as well as offering a kind of instruction manual for the "walk-in exhibit Wunderkammer" in the 21st century.
The tour starts around 1990 and recounts the exciting reconstruction and accessibility of the chamber, which was almost forgotten 30 years ago. Large-format photos are shown in the staircase of the orphanage, impressively documenting the deplorable, even disastrous state of the almost forgotten chamber shortly before it was rescued and restored.
From there, you embark on an exhibition tour with seven themed rooms, which range from the unique classification system of the objects and collection furniture to the ultra-modern systematization of the natural objects at the time. Go in search of lost and enigmatic objects, approach the Indian cabinet from a post-colonial perspective, follow the visitors of the 18th century on a journey through time and let your gaze wander over the Wunderkammer landscape in the 21st century.
"The curiosity that was and should be triggered when visiting a cabinet of curiosities in the early modern period through diverse chains of association and the complex interplay of space, furniture, exhibits, patterns of order and narratives works then as it does today. The collection has enormous potential to fascinate, inspire and enlighten us in the 21st century too. "

The catalog accompanying the annual exhibition was published on November 3, 2025, highlighting the history of the Kunst- und Naturalienkammer since its reopening in 1995. It shows how the macrocosm was depicted in the microcosm in Halle and how knowledge was understood as a path to wonder and insight - from Baroque collection systems to physics theology and current post-colonial perspectives.
