In the third edition of the popular 360° series, the Jena Philharmonic puts Dmitri Shostakovich's First Symphony in a light that almost magically corresponds to its genesis: that youthful flare with which the 19-year-old dared to combine wit, sharpness and bold formal ideas. You can sense the irony, the dazzling interplay of colors, the restless energy of a composer who already sounds unmistakable in his graduation work at the Leningrad Conservatory - a work that immediately attracted international attention after its celebrated premiere in 1926. In 360°, the orchestra sits in a circle around the conductor in the middle of the room, with the audience in between, experiencing every gesture, every breath and every tonal nuance up close. In this way, this symphony is not only heard, but physically experienced - an intensive all-round view into Shostakovich's world.
