Art is international and knows no borders. Our two guests, conductor Renchang Fu and pianist Haiou Zhang, have been living this principle for over 20 years and are at home practically everywhere. The same goes for the Chinese-born composer Tan Dun, whose Symphonic Poem: La-Si-Do was intended as a birthday present for the exceptional singer Placido Domingo. Maurice Ravel's suite Ma mère l'Oye was also intended as a gift for children of friends, in which enchanting fairy tales of Sleeping Beauty, the Empress of the Pagodas or Beauty and the Beast invite us on a dreamy journey full of impressionistic soundscapes inspired by music from the Far East. The Second Piano Concerto by Johannes Brahms is of a completely different nature and shows its symphonic aspirations in its four-movement structure. It is a far cry from the usual virtuoso concertos of his time. The fusion of piano and orchestral sound is so subtly worked out that it points far ahead into the next century in its exploration of romantic depth and serene, exuberant serenity.
