51. Weihnachtsjazzmatinee

In the organizer's words:

The 51st edition of domicil's traditional Christmas Jazz in the spacious foyer of Dortmund's opera house will once again feature 10 bands on 5 stages! The local-regional scene presents itself with a current, yet cross-generational and family-friendly live concert program ranging from modern jazz to funk, from world music to Dixieland, from pop jazz to improvisational music.

The Christmas jazz meeting has always been an important event for the development of the domicil jazz club, which opened in 1969, and in addition to the institutional support as a cultural center by the city's cultural office, the matinee still makes a financial contribution through the proceeds, which primarily benefits the promotion of the young local scene.

Thanks go to all those involved, above all the musicians, the members of the domicil sponsoring association for their voluntary organizational commitment and the Theater Dortmund for their hospitality. Another thank you goes to the audience: without you, without you everything would be nothing. We are very happy about a full and successful event!

Modern Jazz Stage

11.15 - 12.15 h - Mark Maksymovich Quintett

NRW Future Jazz
The young Ukrainian alto saxophonist released his first real jazz album "Suppressions" on YouTube at the age of 15. After fleeing Ukraine in May 2022, he and his family found a new home in Dortmund and an apprenticeship at the Glen Buschmann Jazz Academy. Since then, he has been working tirelessly on his jazz career. On 26.12.23 Mark will be presenting his debut album band with a slightly different line-up featuring a few Ukrainian musicians from his home country. Lena Lorberg plays bass. Oleg Markov and Yurih Sereding from Ukraine play drums and piano. The 2021 Folkwang Jazz Prize winner and 2022 domcil sponsorship prize winner Orest Filipov will also be joining the ensemble. Mark Maksymovich and Jakob Hein are also the winners of the Werner Richard - Dr. Carl Dörken Foundation Prize 2022 and the Bajazzo / Dortmunder Kultur Prize 2023. A concert at a very high level of playing.

12.45 - 13.45 h - Carlotta Ribbe & Anna Karina Barthel Duo Feat. Orest Filipov

Anna and Carlotta met during their studies at the Folkwang University of the Arts and have been playing a mixture of their own compositions and arrangements of well-known melodies since 2022. In an unusual combination of voice and vibraphone, the artists create a special world of sound in their interplay. The duo breaks through the traditional functions of accompanying and melodic instruments and shapes their music through constant interaction, similar to an exciting conversation. Together they combine music and emotion in a varied interplay of spherical, melancholic and rhythmically precise moments.

Big Band Stage

11 - 12 h - UniJAZZity NRW

Children & Youth Jazz Orchestra Westphalia

Dynamic, rousing and musically innovative: UniJAZZity, the Westphalian youth jazz orchestra, has made an excellent name for itself in the state's music scene. The young big band stands for varied and fast-paced jazz across different jazz styles and eras. Founded in 2009, the band has developed into an exceptional ensemble under the artistic direction of jazz trumpeter Christian Kappe. After winning several awards at the NRW state competition "Jugend jazzt", UniJAZZity was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize in 2016. From September, the organizational management of the Westphalian children's and youth orchestra has been transferred to DORTMUND.MUSIK in Dortmund.

12.30 - 13.30 h - GBJA BigBand

Founded in 2000, the GBJA Big Band (Glen Buschmann Jazz Akademie Dortmund) maintains contacts throughout Europe with the training institutes of Dortmund's twin city Novi Sad and other cooperation partners worldwide. In addition, the ensemble forms the basis for annual youth exchange projects with the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague, the Folkwang University Essen and the TU Dortmund as well as other international partners. The pianist Pablo Held (WDR Jazz Prize 2011, Förderpreis des Landes NRW 2013, SWR Prize 2014), the trumpeter Florian Menzel (Bundesfilmpreis 'Lola' best film music 2013, European Trumpet Award 2009) and many other young prizewinners and members of the BuJazzo Germany or Landesjugendjazzorchester NRW have emerged from these internationally conceived workshops and masterclasses offered by the GBJA Dortmund.

Fusion & Groove Stage

11.30 - 12.30 h - DAMMNATION

Dammnation is probably the most brutal new band on the scene. Dripping, honest instrumental funk that makes you push your lips forward, that makes you groove, that loosens the dam and simply lets the energy flow. Dammnation is music for perineal massage, with a nod in the direction of Meters and the late Grant Green. One moment we're dancing and sweating in a club somewhere in New York that's far too cramped and the air far too stuffy, the next we're sitting on the west coast of Sardinia, drinking Campari Spritz with a slice of lemon, gazing dreamily into the sunset and humming schmaltzy Italian songs about love.

13 - 14 h - Bassmati

The smooth, driving drums of Hendrik Lensing, instantly catchy melodies from trumpeter Christian Kappe, deep synth basses and funky, dancing sounds from keyboardist and bandleader Martin Furmann... That's the sound of "Bassmati".
Deep house, funk, jazz, drum & bass, selected samples and loops - the trio uses these ingredients to create its compellingly danceable club sound, which is not just jazz, but always jazz. "Bassmati" is music for the late night movement in a cool ambience. Or for the stage of a hip jazz festival. If your head is already full of strange, complicated sounds, then "Bassmati" are just the thing for you with their groovy, funky, good-humored nonchalance.

Global Stage

11.15 - 12.15 h - Kaleidoskop

Kaleidoscope. Translated as 'to see beautiful forms', it can be heard here quite literally as a brilliant oscillation of all spectral colors, bundled into a captivating sound event. Jazz guitarist Christian Hammer, obviously blessed in his search for beauty, found three powerful fellow musicians and thus a congenial line-up for his quartet.
Saxophonist Dimitrij Markitantov combines modern jazz saxophone with the vibrant, shimmering sound of south-eastern Europe in his brilliant playing. Embedded and surrounded by Christian Hammer's jazz guitar, which sometimes contrasts, sometimes complements, sometimes plays around it sonorously, quietly, carefully groping, then again decidedly, powerfully, full of stylistic brilliance. Alex Morsey lays the impressive foundation of the music with his double bass and tuba, and with his unique style of playing also creates solo highlights of overwhelming musicality. Fethi B.O. holds the rhythmic strings in his hands, whose breathtaking and fast-paced playing creates the framework that opens up the space for the interpretation of his own compositions as well as arrangements of jazz and world music.

12.45 - 13.45 h - Matto Streicht

Matto Streicht is a unique project to create 'rock music for adults' with an unusual instrumentation for rock and jazz music.
Bettina Hagemann and Ludger Schmidt have already played together in many large ensembles in the Ruhr area. The common desire to explore and cross musical boundaries with violin and cello instead of chamber music jazz, and to do so loudly and wildly and with lots of good sounds, gave birth to the idea of a trio, with drums of course, anything else would be nonsense!
So there was definitely only one drummer who was asked: Michael Peters Thöne. After his acceptance was announced in the media, some well-known colleagues fortunately wrote compositions for this trio: John Mc Laughlin,Jack dejohnette Frank Zappa....to name but a few, there were so many of them that only a few pieces could be included in Matto streicht's program, as the musicians wanted to produce their own stuff too, after all. With the legendary statement: "We're not a garbage can!!!" they did scare off some decent composers (Carla Bley, Peter Herbolzheimer, W. Dauner...to name but a few), but, and this is new and very unusual in the industry: they pulled and pulled their thing off!

SOUNDZZ: Family Stage

11.15 - 12.15 h - ME-Lounge

The trio "Me-Lounge" presents well-known songs in a special instrumental combination in a new guise.
As "Duo Aciano", Freya Deiting (violin) and Sandra Wilhelms (guitar) are no longer unknown in the Dortmund region. In the trio extension with Eric Richards (electric bass), their arrangements take on a groovy lounge character.
The three professional musicians create their own versions of songs by Ed Sheeran, Metallica, Sting, Sade and others; the program is also enriched by international instrumentals from Brazil, Argentina, Spain, France, Ireland and others.
Together they take their listeners on an exciting journey to different countries and continents in musical narratives paired with styles of rock and pop, jazz, tango, Brazilian bossa nova, Spanish classical music and folklore.
Lean back and experience these three musicians in their own relaxing world of musical 'Me-Lounge'.

12.45 - 13.45 h - Norbert Sasse & Band

When musician, professional drummer and singer-songwriter Norbert Sasse released his latest album SLIPPERY SURFACE at the end of 2019, nobody would have thought it possible that it would take until 2023 to bring the songs to the stage due to the pandemic. Now the time has come.
In his trio, the songs are presented in an almost chamber music setting.
