Maurice Ravel Ma mère l'oye
Takashi Yoshimatsu Bassoon Concerto Unicorn Circuit
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Symphony No. 41 in C major KV 551 "Jupiter"
Childhood as a significant phase of life is a discovery of the 19th century. Robert Schumann's Kinderszenen are just as much a musical expression of the appreciation of children as Mussorgsky's Kinderstube or Debussy's Children's Corner.
In 1908, Maurice Ravel wrote a fantasy on the fairy tale La belle au bois dormant (Sleeping Beauty) for piano four hands for the children of a family friend. At the request of friends and his publisher, he composed four more similar pieces in 1910, which he compiled under the title Ma mère l'oye (Mother Goose) and orchestrated soon afterwards. With almost magical sounds, he immerses us in the world of mythical creatures and fairies.
It is a common childhood dream to travel to mysterious worlds on the back of a unicorn. The Japanese composer Takashi Yoshimatsu took up this dream and named his colorful bassoon concerto Unicorn Circuit, written in 1988. It depicts the travels of a unicorn through three seasons in magical sounds. Yoshimatsu's music takes us into worlds that lie beyond the limits of our senses, into fantastic regions far removed from everyday life.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart does not draw on extra-musical ideas in his last symphony, even if its title "Jupiter Symphony" suggests this. However, this title does not come from Mozart himself, but probably goes back to the violinist and concert organizer Johann Peter Salomon. However, it is not completely absurd as long as it refers to the radiant festivity that is an important characteristic of the symphony. The symphony's finale has been described as the "supreme triumph of instrumental composition" due to the breathtaking contrapuntal skill that Mozart demonstrates in it. Perhaps Mozart's greatest achievement does not lie in the cerebral acrobatics required for it, but in the fact that we encounter it in the guise of the most serene relaxation.
