Summer is approaching - so it's only natural to set sail for Italy in concert. The young Orestis Papaioannou sets anchor in the Sicilian port city of Palermo with his new composition "Quattro Canti". In this concert, we also make use of the visually powerful genres of opera and film to make the port city appear before the mind's eye in concert. Giuseppe Verdi's overture to his opera "I Vespri siciliani", which premiered in 1855, transports us to the culturally rich Sicily of the Middle Ages with pathos, but also lavish and playful sounds. This is also the setting of the film "The Godfather", which Nino Rota set to music so impressively in 1972 and whose music still evokes the atmosphere of smoky Mafiosi backrooms today.
Pietro Mascagni set the entire musical breadth of the Sicilian peninsula to music at the end of the 19th century with his one-act verismo opera "Cavalleria Rusticana", which is performed in concert. The "peasant chivalry" of "Cavalleria rusticana" depicts archaic rituals in rural Sicily. Here, Easter is still very much in the pagan tradition of the spring sacrifice and a rivalry conflict over a woman is fought out in a traditional knife fight, as between the farmer Turiddu and the carter Alfio over the latter's wife Lola, for whom Turiddu has left the single Santuzza.
