Marc'Antonio e Cleopatra tells the story of the amour fou between the Roman general Marcus Antonius and the Egyptian queen Cleopatra.
The then 26-year-old composer Johann Adolph Hasse first caused a sensation in Naples with his serenata. At the premiere of the work, Farinelli, probably the most famous castrato in opera history, sang the role of Cleopatra, while the male title role was performed by contralto Vittoria Tesi. This special sensual quality of the voice types is also reflected in our performance in an extraordinary way: the male soprano Federico Fiorio sings the role of Cleopatra, while Margherita Maria Sala performs the trouser role of the lover. Both are among the outstanding voices of a new generation of singers.
