Bringing the topic of "dementia" to the public - campaign week with numerous events
Around 1.8 million people in Germany are affected by dementia, the "forgetting disease". This figure is likely to rise in the future. The disease is usually accompanied by a major disruption in the everyday lives of those affected and their social environment.
Against this backdrop, "Dementia Week" has been taking place across Germany for several years, this time from September 16 to 22, 2024 - in conjunction with World
Alzheimer's Day on September 21. The 2024 motto: "Dementia - Together. Courageous. Living". In Oldenburg, various institutions and organizations are involved in an extensive
program of events.
The leading organization is the Dementia Information and
Coordination Office Oldenburg (DIKO). The aim of the campaign week is to bring the topic of "dementia" to the attention of the population. According to
According to their experience, the disease unsettles those affected as well as relatives and friends, but often also those who are not affected, say the two DIKO employees and
Kathrin Kroppach and Renate Gerdes, who are responsible for the program.
"We want to help ensure that people with the disease remain part of our community." Above all, this requires "patience, empathy, understanding and support" from those who are not affected.
As in the previous year, the events will be concentrated in Oldenburg's pedestrian zone around the "temporary space" at Haarenstraße 39, where institutions will be presenting themselves
and provide advice and information on all aspects of dementia. There will also be activities such as a dementia trail, a trial ride on a bicycle rickshaw and a play performed by students from the Protestant Center for Education in Care.
The action week, to which all interested parties are cordially invited, will open on Monday, September 16, 2024 at 7 p.m. with Thomas Lichtenstein, former chamber actor of the Oldenburg State Theater. He will read humorous and encouraging stories about "old age" and "dementia". You are welcome to bring your own choice of reading material.
Sponsors of the Oldenburg "Dementia Week" include the City of Oldenburg, the Oldenburg Dementia Network in the Health Care Network and, for the first time, Oldenburger Volksbank.
