In his photographic work, Alexander Lackmann explores the topic of drug addiction in Germany and shows us not only those affected, but also substitution treatment rooms and drug consumption rooms where substances can be consumed under professional supervision.
2137 drug deaths in Germany in 2024; another high figure that illustrates how relevant the topic remains, even after decades of intensive discussions and the development of prevention measures.
Addiction has been a central theme of Alexander Lackmann's photographic work for several years now. Due in particular to personal experiences in his immediate environment, the intensive confrontation primarily with so-called substance-related addictions is painful for him, but also unavoidable. The photographer's examination of this topic also raises questions about the role of photography, as it is often involved in reinforcing or creating prejudices. A particular interest lies in the photographic representation of addiction: How can this topic be treated with the necessary sensitivity and empathy? How can problematic depictions be recognized and avoided? Is it even possible to represent addiction "correctly" in photography?
