The Percussion Pianist

In an interview, Amaro Freitas describes himself as a "percussion pianist" and he does indeed extract drumming qualities from the piano in his shimmering Brazilian jazz compositions. And so much more! Two themes are particularly close to Freitas' heart: the preservation of the unique nature of his native Brazil and the "decolonization of jazz", as he calls his musical journeys into the indigenous music cultures of Brazil and Africa.
