Ambarchi / Berthling / Werliin: "Ghosted"
(AU, SE)
As a rhythm section, bassist Johan Berthling and drummer Andreas Werliin from Sweden are almost unbeatable: a groove machine that is as agile as it is expansive, whose individual parts mesh perfectly. They have perfected this quality as the driving force in Mats Gustafsson's ensembles Fire! and Fire! Orchestra. Berlin-based Australian guitarist Oren Ambarchi - one of the most influential players in experimental music for three decades - has also collaborated with them time and again, in several duo recordings with Behring in addition to his own involvement in Fire! When the three of them set out to record the album "Ghosted" in 2022, the music, with its flowing ostinato grooves and slowly evolving melodic fragments, suggested a rather unremarkable day in the studio. But this ostensibly relaxed atmosphere was crucial to the session's musical outcome: Berthling lays down full sound and looping grooves; Werliin literally dances around them, hooking in and driving the music forward. Ambarchi works on this rhythmic foundation like a minimalist sound creator. His electric guitar, lying flat in front of him - connected to a Leslie speaker, which, as is well known, gives the Hammond B3 organ its characteristic vibrato - he elicits long tones in shimmering timbres that are more reminiscent of an Indian tanpura than of the classic rock instrument. He works with these colors in a sculptural way, as it were, smearing, splashing and spreading them across the hypnotic tableau of his fellow musicians.
