Content:
Towards the end of the Second World War, twelve-year-old Nanning is constantly busy helping his family on the island of Amrum. After the bombing of Hamburg, he and his family had to flee to the North Sea island, while his father, a high-ranking Nazi, was taken prisoner of war. Adolf Hitler's suicide plunged Nanning's mother Hille, a staunch National Socialist, into a deep depression. Nanning is now more than ever on his own and at the same time has to take responsibility for looking after his reclusive mother. But after the end of the war, there are shortages almost everywhere and he has to try to barter with the other inhabitants of Amrum. However, they are aware of the convictions of Nanning's parents, which has now involuntarily left its mark on him...
Background:
The story of AMRUM is based on the childhood memories of renowned director and screenwriter Hark Bohm. He and Fatih Akin not only have a long-standing friendship, they also co-wrote the screenplay for the award-winning Akin film "Out of Nothing" a few years ago. For AMRUM, they are going one step further. Here too, the screenplay was written by both of them, but with the decision to direct this very personal and poetic story of the friend, Fatih Akin sees AMRUM as a very special film project: "What began as a Hark Bohm film now becomes my twelfth feature film and an extraordinary mission: AMRUM is the journey of young Nanning, who uncovers a little more of the dark family secret with each day of the last week of the Second World War, until he is driven out of paradise at the end".
