In the organizer's words:
Sandra (played by Sandra Hüller), Samuel (played by Swann Arlaud) and their eleven-year-old visually impaired son Daniel (played by Milo Machado Graner) have been living far away from civilization in the mountains for a year. One day, Samuel is found dead at the foot of their house. An investigation is launched into his suspicious death. The investigators seem to want to close the case quickly. Although the evidence against Sandra is not overwhelming, the public prosecutor's office presses charges against her. Sandra struggles to come to terms with her husband's death: was it suicide or actual murder, as the investigators suspect?
A year passes before the trial begins in court. Daniel is also heard as a witness. The relationship between mother and son is put to the test - especially by the prosecution, who brutally probe them with their questions.
