On February 19, 2020, a racist murders nine people in Hanau: Fatih Saraçoğlu, Gökhan Gültekin, Hamza Kurtović, Kaloyan Velkov, Mercedes Kierpacz, Said Nesar Hashemi, Sedat Gürbüz Vili Viorel Păun and another victim. Born in Neubeckum/Westphalia in 1969, the playwright, director, actor and doctor Tuğsal Moğul deals with the effects of racially motivated violence in Germany in his works. In his latest research project, he takes a theatrical approach to the Hanau attack.
In his play, Moğul gives the victims' perspective a voice and questions the many mistakes made by the police, the public prosecutor's office, politicians and the media before, during and after the attack: The assassin was already known to the police as a right-wing extremist. Why wasn't he better monitored? Why was the emergency number 110 not available on the night of the attack? Why was the emergency exit in the Arena Bar locked? How can it be that SEK officers at the scene of the crime were later exposed as right-wing extremists? In close cooperation with the Initiative 19 February Hanau, Moğul is asking for consequences and calling for a complete investigation so that we can do justice to the victims and their families and remember them.
The NSU murders were tried at the Munich Higher Regional Court. The perpetrator from Hanau evaded the trial and his conviction by committing suicide, and there is no judicial investigation. Tuğsal Moğul does not deal with the murders in a conventional theater space, but deliberately chooses public places in the middle of urban society, the town hall in Recklinghausen, the town hall festival hall and the district court in Münster.
