Anime Cinema: Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland

A special screening to mark the 25th anniversary of the most famous anime by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Now playing at the Intimes.

When young Chihiro walks through a mysterious tunnel during a trip with her parents, she has no idea that she is crossing the border into a hidden world. On the other side, a mysterious city awaits her—inhabited by spirits and magical creatures—a place usually hidden from humans. But the trip takes a dramatic turn: her parents are turned into pigs, and Chihiro herself is in danger of disappearing from the human world. With the help of the mysterious boy Haku, she must hold her own in Yubaba’s magical bathhouse, encounter enigmatic beings such as the mysterious No-Face, and face the trials of this strange world.

With *Spirited Away*, Hayao Miyazaki made animation history. Following its theatrical release in 2001, this Studio Ghibli film became a worldwide success. The Japanese cult classic captivates audiences with its touching coming-of-age story and universal themes, which have lost none of their relevance or magic even after 25 years. At the 2002 Berlinale, the film was awarded the Golden Bear, marking an extraordinary milestone in the international recognition of Japanese animation.

Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli and creator of numerous classics such as “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Princess Mononoke,” and “Howl’s Moving Castle,” received the 2003 Oscar® for “Best Animated Feature” for “Spirited Away.” In 2024, he was once again awarded an Oscar® for “The Boy and the Heron.”
