Anne-Marie Mille, an aging actress, reviews her life. She recounts her dreary youth in the French provinces, her childhood admiration of the actors in her hometown, and her good fortune in being hired as an actress at a suburban theater in Paris: "On stage, I was sometimes Anne-Marie the Beauty. Here she was happy, but the great success did not come. She envied her late friend and colleague Gigi, who always got the bigger roles, received famous lovers, and even made it into films, while Anne-Marie's husband bored her and her son got on her nerves. But Anne-Marie has outlived Gigi and most of her companions, and looks back reflectively on her life and encounters and reassesses them. Yasmina Reza's wistful and whimsical monologue, written expressly for an actor, paints a graceful portrait of an aging woman.
