ANTIGONE

In the organizer's words:

War threatens the city of Thebes. The sons of Oedipus, Eteocles and Polyneikes, are bitterly fighting over who will rule. When all attempts at mediation fail, Polyneikes attacks his homeland with an overpowering army. A last chance to save the city is prophesied: a sacrifice to the gods. It demands the royal advisor Creon's dearest possession - his youngest child. Peace returns. But the brothers are both dead, mourned by their sister Antigone. Creon takes power and, with his first law, refuses to bury his enemy Polyneikes. Unlike her sister Ismene, Antigone is not prepared to accept this. Her radical resistance puts Creon in trouble and puts his politics to the test.
In his version of "Antigone", Potsdam-based author John von Düffel assembles scenes from three ancient tragedies into a coherent plot and expands the conflict between Creon and Antigone to include the immediate past. Bettina Jahnke's production shows people who are forced to make decisions in the face of an existential situation and under extreme time pressure. The consequences are always extreme - whether for their personal lives or for the good of all. A highly topical story develops from a six-person chorus, making it possible to experience how an open democratic society can be transformed into an autocracy at lightning speed.
