LECTURE & DISCUSSION

with SHARON ADLER

October 7, 2023 marked a turning point for Jewish life worldwide. Following the terrorist attack on Israel, which left over 1200 people dead and hundreds displaced, the Jewish community was not only faced with a new wave of hatred and violence, but also a shocking lack of solidarity - especially from circles that are otherwise committed to feminism and anti-discrimination.

The targeted attacks on women and girls on 7 October, the reports of sexualized violence and the public denial or trivialization of these crimes raise urgent questions: Why did many (queer) feminist groups remain silent? Why were Jewish women abandoned by their supposed allies? And what consequences did this development have for Jewish women artists, feminists and writers - especially in the cultural and artistic fields?

Sharon Adler will shed light on these issues, talk about anti-Semitism in feminist discourse and discuss ways in which we can form genuine alliances, actively combat anti-Semitic discrimination and develop solutions.

SHARON ADLER, born in 1962 in West Berlin, is a journalist, publicist, photographer and moderator. She founded the online magazine AVIVA-Berlin (2000) and has been on the board of the ZURÜCK-GEBEN Foundation for the Promotion of Jewish Women in Art and Science since 2013. She is also committed to the visibility of Jewish women's biographies, including as co-editor of the series "Jüdinnen in Deutschland nach 1945. Erinnerungen, Brüche, Perspektiven" (bpb). Together with Shlomit Lehavi and Dr. Ulrike Saß, she is working on the project "Making Visible - Traces of Jewish Commitment in the Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig".
