Johann Sebastian Bach: "Goldberg Variations" BWV 988 (transcription by Nevermind)

Jean Rondeau is a gifted soloist on the harpsichord, organ and piano. But the busy French all-round musician is also co-founder of the quartet Nevermind, which has come together in its enthusiasm for early music, jazz and folklore. With impressive virtuosity and vitality as well as the audible joy of tonal experimentation, Nevermind transcends the boundaries of the traditional quartet repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries. In the church where Arp Schnitger was baptized, the quartet presents the Goldberg Variations composed by Bach for the harpsichord in its own version for four instruments. Outrageous? Not at all, because most of the variations are in three parts, which is why even the very first printed editions contained arrangements for ensembles of melody instruments. And so the sophisticated structure of Bach's pinnacle of baroque variation art, with its permanent changes of style, tempo and affect, should gain in spatiality, volume and plasticity in the Nevermind version - full of respect for the spirit of Bach's original!
