After an apprenticeship with Arp Schnitger, Christian Vater founded his own workshop in Hanover in 1702. He personally inaugurated the instrument in Bockhorn on December 25, 1722. Edoardo Bellotti, Professor of Harpsichord at the Eastman School of Music/University of Rochester, is one of the leading international experts on the keyboard repertoire from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. In his program, he combines works written for joyous occasions or funeral services. While Alessandro Poglietti dedicated his suite "Il Rossignolo" to the newly married imperial couple Leopold I and Eleonora in 1677, Dieterich Buxtehude's "Mit Fried und Freud" was written in 1674 as funeral music for his deceased father. Johann Caspar Kerll, on the other hand, set the stages of a battle, from the formation of the armies to the victory celebration, to gripping music in his "Battaglia". The Bolognese monk Padre Martini created over 30 masses and was also a respected teacher of composition. His pupils included Bach's youngest son Johann Christian, whose version of Haydn's Symphony No. 53 is captivating with its festive and majestic character.
