Roland Wilson, Musica Fiata and La Capella Ducale have specialized in the performance of 16th and 17th century music for decades. This period in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation was initially overshadowed by the plague and the Thirty Years' War, but also produced one of the most important composers in music history, Heinrich Schütz. Wilson and his ensembles have continuously set standards with the performance and recording of his works and were awarded the International Heinrich Schütz Prize in 2023. The extremely magnificent Magnificat and the expansive setting of the 85th Psalm show Schütz at the height of his powers. One of his master students at the Dresden court was Matthias Weckmann, who later led Hamburg's musical life to new heights as organist of St. Jacob's Church. Dieterich Buxtehude, who is represented with his Ciaconna in E minor, provided musical brilliance in neighboring Lübeck. One of his earliest church cantatas, "Nach dir Herr verlanget mich", shows that the young Bach owed much to the influences of these three composers. With the Schnitger organ and the seductive sound of the cornetts and baroque trombones, this promises a wonderful impression of the musical reality of the time.
