In previous years, the "Paths to Bach" studio has traced the influences that provided the composer with important inspiration. These came from all over Europe from Giovanni Gabrieli, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Heinrich Schütz and Dieterich Buxtehude, but also from his own family. In this year's Atelier, under the renewed direction of Lionel Meunier, the focus is now on the master himself. Bach's motets form only a tiny group of works in the cosmos of his sacred music, but they occupy a special position. They were the first works to be printed after Bach's death in 1802/03 and quickly established themselves in the flourishing bourgeois concert life. They can be performed a cappella or with instrumental accompaniment. Lionel Meunier performs them with the Atelier singers - of course! - with the organ. In combination with one of Schnitger's best-preserved instruments, their variety of timbres and their mix of choral sonority and solo virtuosity will once again be an experience!
