Artist Talk - World Press Photo 2023

In the organizer's words:

Artist Talk with the World Press Photo award winners Anush Babajanyan and Jonas Kakó!

In the framework of this year's World Press Photo exhibition, a real highlight awaits all those interested in international press photography. Together with the German Society for Photography (DGPh), the Kulturort Depot invites two of the photographers awarded in this year's competition to talk about their work:

Armenian photojournalist Anush Babajanyan (*1983) focuses on social issues and personal history in her projects. She is a member of VII Photo Agency and a National Geographic Explorer.

Babajanyan photographed in Nagorno-Karabakh for over six years and compiled the photographs in her book, A Troubled Home. In addition to her work in the South Caucasus, Babajanyan also photographs in Central Asia, where she works on environmental stories. Her project "Battered Waters" was awarded in this year's World Press Photo competition in the category of best long series from the Asia region.

In 2019, she was the winner of the Canon Female Photojournalist Grant. Her photographs have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, National Geographic, Foreign Policy Magazine and other international publications.

Jonas Kakó (b. 1992) is a documentary photographer based in Hanover, Germany.

In his photographic practice, Kakó deals with the effects of the climate crisis, focusing on the individual fates of people who are already suffering from the consequences of global warming and whose livelihoods are threatened.

Since 2013, he has been studying photojournalism and documentary photography at the University of Hanover, Germany.

His work has won awards at the Bar Tur Photo Award and POY (Environmental Vision Award Finalist Winner).

Kakó's photograph, "The Dying River," won the 2023 World Press Photo award for best single image for the North America region. The photograph is part of a larger project about how the climate crisis and increasing water demands are affecting the Colorado River. It features three beekeepers facing the challenge of saving bees in this drought-stricken region.

Jonas Kakó's freelance work has appeared in National Geographic, Stern, Vice, de Volkskrant and Neue Zürcher Zeitung, among others, and he has previously worked for NZZ and Stern.
