artspring berlin - The Pankow art month

For the eighth time, artspring berlin invites you to a month full of creativity with numerous exhibitions and events from May 3 to June 2, presenting the many faces of the Pankow art world. During this time, the district will be transformed into an art festival with many unusual venues, including a clinic, a cemetery cottage, a castle park, an allotment garden, a theater, a cinema, the town hall and many more. In addition to all genres of visual art - painting, drawing, graphics, sculpture, installation, video, performance - other series of events are devoted to literature and film. More than 300 renowned as well as young and lesser-known artists will be showing works in their studios up close and free of charge.

The festival title "Zeige deine W_nde" is also a call to Pankow artists to submit their contributions via an open call. Following on from Joseph Beuys' installation "Show your wound", this year's festival focuses on the vulnerability of society and the individual against the backdrop of an unsettling backdrop defined by war, growing social polarization and populism. The blank space marked in the title leaves room for interpretation for alliterations such as wound, turning point, walls, which open up further contexts of meaning.

Several group exhibitions form the heart of the festival and bring together both local and international artistic positions. The "Young Scene", an exhibition curated by students from the Weißensee School of Art, will take place in the Theater unterm Dach. "Die komische Linie " at the Park-Klinik Weißensee is all about the versatile expressive possibilities of the line. There will also be an exhibition at the artspring PopUpStore , which will find its new home in the Rathaus-Center Pankow from May. A three-part show on the themes of "WENDE", "WUNDE", "WÄNDE" will feature Pankow artists. The canon of the festival theme and the 30th anniversary of Pankow's town twinning with Ashkelon, Israel, includes an exhibition of artists from Ashkelon combined with a documentary presentation in the vaulted cellar of the old Königstadtbrauerei industrial courtyard. An open-air exhibition can be explored on foot at this year's artspring artwalk in the Bornholm I and II allotment garden colonies, where works can be seen in the public community garden and the individual plots. Artists who are acutely affected by the rampant loss of studios in Berlin or who have already lost their workspaces will be exhibiting at Pankow Town Hall.

artspring film presentsa curatorial selection of film works by film and video makers on three consecutive evenings in the Brotfabrik cinema .The curated artspring literature program offers readings by various authors at several of the festival's exhibition venues.

The final festive highlight of the festival is the Open Studio Weekend, during which the participating artists invite visitors into their workspaces. Against the backdrop of Berlin's precarious studio situation, which has resulted in the increasing disappearance of artistic spaces, the studio visit is a valuable opportunity to get close to the creation of art and to come into direct contact with the artists. Artists can be found surrounded by their work, both in studio buildings and in individual studios.

artspring berlin is the only art festival in Berlin whose initiators and organizers are all artists themselves. Over the continuous activity of the past years, it has developed into a large network whose contacts reach far beyond the borders of Berlin. The festival always focuses on topics that are of particular relevance to artistic debate and the artistic community itself. With several projects, including the PopUpStore, from May onwards in the Rathaus-Center Pankow, the artothek berlin , which has established the Artist Talk series in cooperation with the Kurt Tucholsky Library, the FUGE art space in the Heinrich Böll Library and the recurring Light Art Festival in winter, artspring berlin also offers an art program in Pankow throughout the year.
