What will the future look like on the European continent? Where will we live - on artificial islands in the Baltic Sea or in tent cities in public parks? Who will govern us? Libertarian entrepreneurs in private cities or simply: the market?
The story of seventeen-year-old Yada is set in this future. For as long as she can remember, she has lived in the "Seestatt", a special political zone founded by her father and mostly controlled from afar. And Yada begins to have doubts: is the mainland really uninhabitable? Why is she being sedated with pills every day and what does this have to do with the mysterious illness and the alleged death of her mother? She sets off to uncover the truth. Theresia Enzensberger's new novel oscillates between a vision of the future, coming-of-age and philosophical reflection on islands and also puts the human quest for utopia to the test. "At Sea" was on the longlist for the German Book Prize. Director Theresa Thomasberger and set designer Mirjam Schaal focus on feminist and materialist discourses with humor and extravagant aesthetics in their work.
