The exploration of light and space is the central theme of artist Elke Zauner from Tacherting. Her works provide insights into a wide variety of indoor and outdoor situations. Through the use of color alone, but not from calculated foregrounds and backgrounds, the painter develops perspectives that confuse the viewer's perception in the best sense of the word. Her color constructions are thus experienced as ambiguously emotional, not suppressing the memory of real spatial situations, but rather creating coherent spatial alignments. More or less superimposed, by overlapping different layers of color, glazes or light-dark contrasts, the artist creates a complex pictorial architecture with generous brushstrokes using the most diverse means of painting. Elke Zauner often extends her canvases directly onto the wall, creating a direct connection to the exhibition space on the one hand and adding a further layer on the other.
While at first glance her paintings appear to be merely a collection of lines and surfaces, a longer, closer look reveals associative spaces of various kinds and depths that invite the viewer to search, find and linger. The pictures open up the walls, break through them and invite the viewer to venture a look into new, strange worlds.
Elke Zauner, born in Altötting in 1972, trained as a church painter and subsequently studied painting under Prof. Hans Baschang at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After graduating in 2002, she received numerous prizes and scholarships, including a DAAD scholarship for Vienna and a scholarship at the Villa Massimo in Rome. She currently lives and works in her home town of Tacherting in Chiemgau.
