Ausflug: Wanderung zur Burg Schönburg – Verwunschene Pfade, Geologie & Weitblick

Pristine forests, historic trails, and a medieval hilltop castle that towers majestically over the Saale River. This tour is one of the absolute highlights of the Saale-Unstrut region!

What to Expect

Together, we’ll leave everyday life behind and immerse ourselves in nature. We’ll meet at the Leißling train stop (Burgenlandkreis) and, after just a few meters, set off along winding, almost untouched trails. Our route takes us through the “Vier Berge” nature reserve with its ancient, soulful forests and historic trails. Passing through the beautiful Franzosental valley, we reach a spectacular geological trail that reveals the region’s history, dating back millions of years.

Our destination and the emotional highlight: Schönburg Castle. It stands proudly atop a 40-meter-high sandstone cliff directly above the Saale River. From the keep, we’ll enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. In the historic castle courtyard, we’ll take time for a leisurely picnic break (bring your own lunch) and let this historic, energizing place work its magic on us in peace and quiet. We’ll then hike back to the starting point along rustic alternative routes, following the natural rhythm of our steps.

The highlights of this tour:

• “Vier Berge” Nature Reserve: Ancient, near-pristine forests that offer a sense of peace.

• Schönburg Geology Trail: Experience hidden phenomena of Earth’s history up close.

• Schönburg Castle: A group picnic break in the historic castle courtyard (bring your own lunch), a majestic view of the Saale Valley from the keep, and a moment of inner peace.

Tour Information:

• Meeting point: Leißling train stop at 10:00 a.m.

• Traveling by train: Easily accessible from Leipzig (e.g., S6 from Leipzig Central Station at 9:06 a.m., arriving at 9:50 a.m.). Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements.

• Traveling by car: Free parking available at the train stop.

• Start & End Point: Leißling train stop (loop hike)

• Distance & Elevation Gain:13 km | approx. 234 hm of ascent and descent

• Duration: approx. 3.5 hours of pure walking time (approx. 6 hours total, including breaks for refreshments, informational stops, a leisurely picnic break, and moments of reflection)

• Difficulty: Moderate (well-suited for regular hikers with moderate fitness)

• Packed lunch: We’ll take a longer break along the way—please bring something for a small picnic and plenty of water.

• Weather & Gear: The tour generally takes place in all weather conditions (except in the event of severe weather warnings). Sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and a good attitude are required 😉
