Ausstellungseröffnung: When We Woke Up, It Was War

This documentary photo project tells the stories of Ukrainian women who were forced to leave their homeland after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in order to continue their lives in safety. Many of them faced the challenge of starting over in a foreign country with little more than what would fit into a backpack or a small suitcase. Portraits of the women, documentary photographs, texts, quotes, and personal belongings offer insights into their experiences of fleeing, arriving, and integrating in Germany.

The project aims to highlight the impact of the war and give the affected
people a face and a voice. Their personal stories also represent the experiences of countless people worldwide who have lost their homes due to war and violence. Who are the people we encounter every day? How do they cope with the consequences of war, displacement, and starting over? What challenges shape their daily lives, and what gives them the strength to keep moving forward?

The women profiled share how their lives have unfolded since fleeing: the changes in their living conditions, the impact of war on their daily lives, their relationships, and their outlook on the future.
