Amy Winehouse (played by Marisa Abela) grows up in a loving but dysfunctional Jewish family in London's Southgate neighborhood. At 18, she still shuttles back and forth between the home of her mother Janis (played by Juliet Cowan), who is struggling with health problems, and that of her father, cab driver Mitch (played by Eddie Marsan). The whole family loves classic jazz, a style of music that inspires the talented singer and aspiring songwriter as much as more modern pop music. Her closest confidante is her grandmother Cynthia (played by Lesley Manville), who is also her role model in terms of style and clothing. During one of her performances in local pubs, Winehouse is discovered by manager Nick Shymansky (played by Sam Buchanan), who manages to get her a contract with an established record label. As her career soars, Amy increasingly turns to alcohol and drugs - a habit that at first seems to do no harm to the quality of her songs or the intensity of her unique voice and even reinforces her image as a rebellious free spirit.

One day, by chance, she meets the charismatic Blake (played by Jack O'Connell) in a pub, recognizes her soulmate in him and falls madly in love. But soon the artist's inexorable rise to fame, the obligations that come with it and the pressure of publicity, as well as the slowly emerging effects of her reckless treatment of her body, stand in the way of Amy's happiness...
