Banquet of Consequences, the new Berlin sextet of bassist Antonio Borghini, brings together jazz traditions from the Netherlands, Italy and South Africa in a unique way at the Quasimodo for the evening's crowning finale. The group's eponymous debut album moves between free improvisations - so-called dialogues - and composed material - sometimes delicate, sometimes deliberately chaotic.

Hardly any band embodies the cosmopolitan complexity of Berlin's jazz and improvisation scene as convincingly as this sextet led by bassist Antonio Borghini. Not only is the still fairly young band multinational, with members from France, Turkey, Australia, Great Britain and Italy. The music itself also bears witness to this - be it in the form of effervescent Kwela influences from South Africa, the semi-ironic bombast of Italian jazz, the tongue-in-cheek austerity of the Dutch scene or the Berlin-typical experimentation with free forms. Banquet of Consequences' eponymous debut album moves between free improvisations, so-called "dialogues," and fixed compositions - sometimes delicate, sometimes chaotic. "Thank You Sean," for example, begins with a tense interaction among the group before pianist Rieko Okuda suddenly introduces a gospel-like piano pattern reminiscent of Chris McGregor. Shortly thereafter, the band collectively evokes the spirit of Sean Bergin, who was a fixture on the Dutch scene for many years. Tenor saxophonist Tobias Delius, who played with Bergin in Amsterdam, and alto saxophonist Pierre Borel are on top form together here, playing off each other again and again. The rhythm section, consisting of Okuda, Borghini, drummer Steve Heather and cellist Anıl Eraslan, provides drive, but also adds melodic interventions, surprising turns and dadaistic moments to the whole.
