A taz Talk with Bartholomäus Grill, a native of Bavaria and a farmer's son, on his book premiere "Bauernsterben.
We don't see the grass growing, we just trample on it: How the global agribusiness industry is destroying traditional agriculture and farming structures, and in the process exacerbating the ecological crisis: "Bauernsterben" - that's the title of Bartholomäus Grill's new book.
It describes the global triumph of agribusiness and the fatal consequences for humans, animals and the environment. This book is a passionate appeal for a radical transformation of our agricultural and food system. It is about the war against nature - and against ourselves.
Grill grew up as a farm boy in an era when most farms still operated in natural cycles. Later, he experienced the beginning of the "green revolution," the push to modernize agriculture that triggered an unprecedented death of farmers.
Industrial agriculture is one of the most destructive developments of the modern world, wreaking economic and ecological havoc, leading to social dislocation. At its heart is the plundering of limited biological resources and the widespread destruction of our livelihoods.
🐾 Bartholomäus Grill, born in 1954 in Oberaudorf am Inn, grew up on his parents' sustainable farm. He studied philosophy, sociology and art history. For four decades, he reported from Africa as a correspondent for Die Zeit and Der Spiegel, and has written repeatedly on topics of global agriculture.
🐾 Jan Feddersen moderates the conversation. He is taz editor for special assignments as well as curator of taz Talks and taz lab.
Audience questions and comments in the livestream highly encouraged, answers and other statements guaranteed.
