Can basic brain functions be modeled and studied using mathematical methods?

The brain is a complex and dynamic system. Individual neurons can be modeled well mathematically. But what emerges from the interaction of millions of cells? And where in the brain is information encoded? Does each cell process its own information, or does it arise from the activity of local groups of cells, in higher-level regions, or in specific areas?

Tilo SchwalgerandNils Grevenare developing mathematical methods to investigate the fundamental mechanisms of cognitive functions across all levels and scales. Together, they will present the theoretical models they have developed—how they use them to draw conclusions about the mechanisms of information processing and storage, and how their methods can be applied beyond this.
