At a height of 30 meters, the rooftop terrace of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin offers a unique view in all four directions of Berlin’s landmarks, including Museum Island, the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, Berlin Cathedral, and St. Mary’s Church. But you can also spot Neukölln City Hall, Teufelsberg, and Humboldt Hain.
History of the Site
The view allows visitors to visualize spatial connections to the site’s history, such as theCrown Prince’s Palace, theArmory, and theAltes Museum. In front of the Baret is one of 36 markers detailing the site’s history, featuring an iced coffee cup from the milk bar in the Palace of the Republic.
Architectural Art on the Rooftop Terrace
An abstract, golden city panorama blends into the panoramic view of Berlin to the east, artistically expanding it. The architectural art project*Insurgentes Sur* by Antje Schiffers andThomas Sprengeralludes to the silhouette of Mexico City, one of Berlin’s sister cities. The title“Insurgentes Sur”refers to the southern section of the Mexican capital’s longest main street, the Avenida de los Insurgentes (Avenue of the Insurgents). Further references can be found to Alexander von Humboldt’s expeditions. Humboldt stayed in Mexico City during his expedition in 1803. The gold leaf used in the “Art in Architecture” project establishes a connection to the collections of the Ethnological Museum by alluding to historical and contemporary power dynamics in global relations.
For the second installation on the rooftop terrace,“The Cosmos – Things Fall Apart”byEmeka Ogboh,Wilhelm von Humboldt’sfascination with language serves as the starting point. Thesound installation, featuringa choral rendition of theIgbofolk song“Nne, Nne, Udu”from Nigeria, is an allegory about a young girl whose careless behavior while carrying a valuable clay pot on her head results in the pot shattering into many pieces. The folk song and the chants stem from a rich Igbo tradition of oral storytelling; they criticize the destructive influences of Christianity on Igbo culture. The multichannel sound installation plays on the hour.

The terrace, which covers approximately 1,800 square meters, is accessible via an elevator from the ground floor. The terrace is wheelchair accessible.
A ticket is required for your visit.3 € / reduced rate 1.50 €. Please use the elevator in the stairwell. You also need a ticket to visit the Baret rooftop restaurant. If you have a reservation, please show your reservation confirmation at the elevator. Wheelchair accessible.
Hours: Mon, Wed, Thu, Sun: 10:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m.; Fri, Sat: 10:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Closed on Tuesdays.
When you visit the rooftop terrace, you can alsovisittheBaret rooftop restaurant. The Baret restaurant is open from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. It is closed on Tuesdays.
