Beth Gibbons Lives Outgrown - Tour

The last time we heard Beth Gibbons' unique, otherworldly voice in a pop context was in the final minutes of Portishead's third album "Third". On the almost noisy finale "Threads", she sings with all the desperation she can muster that she is "tired and worn". So it is a minor sensation when Gibbons now announces her new solo album "Lives Outgrown", her second after 2002's "Ouf Of Season".

The new songs were created with two well-known collaborators: drummer Lee Harris from Talk Talk and producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Florence and The Machine, Depeche Mode). Harris was on board early on and helped Gibbons find the right groove and sound for the record. Gibbons told him right at the beginning, "I can't work with the snare anymore. A lot of beats are irritating to me these days because they sound so worn out." Harris said: "Wherever she wanted to go sonically, I followed her." This led to an amusing incident in the studio. Gibbons once kicked a cardboard box in frustration and half-jokingly said: "I wouldn't be surprised if this sounds better on tape than anything we've tried before." And so it was: Gibbons, Harris and, a little later, James Ford set about combining their new compositions with a very unique, very warm heartbeat. Beth Gibbons even bought new instruments such as a jute and a hammered dulcimer. So the feeling of being "tired and worn" has been swapped for a spirit of musical discovery.

We haven't heard much of "Lives Outgrown" yet, but with an artist like her, who releases so selectively and tastefully, we can assume that the songs on the new album sound at least as brilliant as the title. After all, these two words alone are already a little poem. What you do know is that the organic, grooving sound that Beth Gibbons and Lee Harris have found is made for live performance. In Germany, Beth Gibbons will present the new album on June 2 at the Uber Eats Music Hall in Berlin.
