Transatlantic relations are at a turning point. As recently emphasized in its new national security strategy, the USA no longer wants to be the guarantor of the liberal international order. On the contrary - they are actively working against this order, which they themselves created after the Second World War. The intervention in Venezuela and the threats against Greenland are just two examples. They expect Europe to ensure its own security.

These developments, which have been announced over a long period of time, are hitting Europeans at a time when Russia is waging a war of aggression against Ukraine and wants to destroy the European security order. At the same time, Europeans are not (yet) in a position to take their security into their own hands. In his book Big Brother Gone: Europe and the End of Pax Americana, Dr. Marco Overhaus (SWP) analyzes how profoundly American foreign and security policy is changing - and what this means for Europe.

In the event of the same name, Dr. Overhaus describes the central causes of the American change of course, assesses its consequences for NATO and European defence capabilities and outlines the political and military steps Europe must take to strengthen its own security in the long term.

The lecture will be followed by an opportunity for discussion.
