According to the German Red Cross Blood Donor Service North-East, around 450 to 500 blood donations are needed every day in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein to cover the needs of hospitals and doctors' surgeries. As blood products only have a limited shelf life - platelets, for example, only last four days, red blood cells a maximum of six weeks - regular donations are essential. A reliable supply is only possible through the continuous commitment of many voluntary donors. Younger people in particular are also needed to ensure long-term patient care.

Healthy people aged 18 and over with a minimum body weight of 50 kilograms can donate blood. The DRK Blood Donation Service North-East offers a non-binding online donation check on its website at: https://www.drk-blutspende.de/spende-check/nordost
