Concert start in the year 2026 in the REH!

Jazz am Helmholtzplatz e.V. has a long history with the Raumerweiterungshalle and Ulf Geyersbach: concerts have been held here regularly since 2019, making it one of the association's most important venues. Then the REH was relocated, the site was renovated and Ulf Geyersbach, a wonderful host who will be greatly missed, gave notice to terminate the lease. We are delighted that the owner is opening the doors of the REH for us again.

The resumption of concerts at the REH marks the 31st edition of Jazz am Helmholtzplatz e.V.'s Brazil&Jazz series, which aims to highlight the links between Música Popular Brasileira and jazz.

Until a few years ago, jazz in Brazil, with its strong political and cultural connotations critical of the US, was barely visible for a long time. Around ten years ago, Rio de Janeiro's concert calendars barely mentioned the country's rich jazz tradition. Choro, which originated in Brazil at the end of the 19th century, often served as an artistic framework for jazz musicians - including Paulo Moura, who presented jazz primarily in the context of choro concerts. Between 1990 and 2020, the choro could be heard everywhere in the Lapa, Rio de Janeiro's old town.

Choro is ultimately itself a genuinely Brazilian form in which European and African musical traditions merge. As early as the 1920s, it entered into a symbiosis with North American jazz when Pixinguinha heard Louis Armstrong in Paris.
