Supported by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard, Robert Gardner led a large-scale expedition to the highlands of New Guinea in 1961 to research and film the Dani people living there. The film is carried by a masterful montage and a lyrically dense and metaphorically rich commentary spoken by Gardner, who knows about the thoughts and feelings of the protagonists and incorporates mythical elements.
