Young matjes on its birthday: double reason to celebrate

There is reason to celebrate at the Schaufenster Fischereihafen in Bremerhaven: the pleasure and adventure mile is celebrating its 34th birthday and the arrival of the "nieuwe Haring" from the Netherlands at the same time. Around 50,000 visitors are expected to attend the Bremerhaven Matjestage & Hafenspektakel from July 10 to 12.

The birthday of the Schaufenster Fischereihafen dates back to July 11, 1992, when the advertising association around Packhalle IV invited visitors to a small festival for the first time. At that time, today's marketplace was barely paved and there were only a few stalls - but all the more enthusiasm. The "Hafenspektakel" in the first half of July quickly established itself as a permanent fixture in the event calendar - with matjes, music and a maritime attitude to life, it became one of Bremerhaven's most popular port festivals. Visitors can expect matjes in all its variations, live music, a children's program and plenty of culinary highlights.

Served straight "from the knife", matjes is a special experience here. For those who enjoy it: grab the matjes by the tail, lift it over your head and then let it slide into your mouth with relish - traditionally, this is how it tastes best.

Vacation feeling at the harbor

With tons of fine sand, beach chairs and deckchairs, a small oasis is created on the market square. Fresh fish dishes, cool drinks and a view of the water invite you to linger.
